Corrective Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery) & Genioplasty (Chin surgery)

Corrective Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery) — Queensland's Leading Specialist

Dr Webber is one of Australia's most experienced orthognathic surgeons. With a career spent at the forefront of orthognathic surgery in Queensland, Dr Webber has helped shape the next generation of surgeons in the field, and brings that same depth of expertise to every patient he treats.

What is Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery? orthognathic

Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) involves precisely repositioning the bones of the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or both, to correct skeletal discrepancies that affect bite, function, and facial balance. It may also include chin surgery (genioplasty).

This is among the most technically demanding procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery, requiring a rare combination of surgical precision, three-dimensional planning, and deep experience. Very few specialists sub-specialise in this field. Dr Webber is one of them, performing maxillary and mandibular osteotomies routinely as a core part of his practice.

Who needs this surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is performed to place the jaws in the optimal anatomical position, with both functional and aesthetic benefits:

- Correcting underbites, overbites, crossbites, and open bites
- Improving chewing, eating, and speaking
- Relieving jaw joint (TMJ) pain and sleep apnoea related to jaw position
- Restoring facial symmetry and balance
- Enhancing facial profile and overall aesthetics

Orthognathic surgery is almost always performed in close collaboration with an orthodontist. Dr Webber works with the majority of the Gold Coast's leading orthodontic practices to deliver optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes for every patient.

SURGICALLY ASSISTED MAXILLARY EXPANSION (SAME)

Where the upper jaw requires widening before definitive jaw surgery, Dr Webber performs a Surgically Assisted Maxillary Expansion (SAME). This is a preparatory procedure that creates the skeletal width needed for ideal tooth alignment prior to corrective jaw surgery.

Genioplasty

A genioplasty reshapes or repositions the chin to improve facial balance and proportion. Unlike implants, a genioplasty moves the patient's own bone, making it a permanent, natural, and highly versatile solution.

Dr Webber can advance, reduce, or laterally reposition the chin point to address projection deficiency, excess, or asymmetry. The procedure is performed entirely through an incision inside the mouth, leaving no visible scarring. The chin is secured with small titanium plates and screws.

Most patients return home the day after surgery. Genioplasty is frequently performed alongside orthognathic surgery to complete a comprehensive facial refinement, though Dr Webber also offers it as an isolated procedure.

PLANNING, HOSPITAL & RECOVERY

Orthognathic surgery requires careful pre-surgical planning. Typically including 3D imaging, dental models, and close coordination with your orthodontist. Surgery is performed as an inpatient under general anaesthetic at a Gold Coast hospital.

If you are uninsured, Dr Webber strongly recommends obtaining private health insurance prior to treatment, as out-of-pocket costs can be substantial without it. This can be discussed in detail at your initial consultation.

Following surgery, Dr Webber personally conducts all post-operative reviews in his rooms, ensuring continuity of care from the operating table through to your final outcome.
